Good Bye ?!

Beby Lokita Salsabila

Reasons
Good Bye, sounds familiar right? We often use it at the end of companionship. Do we really know and understand the meaning of Good bye itself? Or we just know the meaning in the general one?
In my opinion, generally I guess the meaning of Good Bye itself is from the word ‘Good’ and ‘Bye’; Bye is a word that indicates to discord and Good is something enjoyable, satisfying, fine and there is no problem on that. So, perhaps when the speaker’s say Good Bye there is a hope that the discords have to be ending with something good, enjoyable, and also satisfying. Is that one really the meaning of Good Bye? But not at all circumstances could be discords in good way right? There could be something worst at the end of the companionship, should we still say “Good Bye” for those circumstances based on my interpretation?? And also we know other phrases which are collocate like good day, good evening, etc. Is there any relationship each other? Well, because of those reasons I would like to know more and deeper about Good Bye.

Analyzes
Nowadays, Good Bye/gʊdˈbʌɪ/ communication noun is used to express good wishes when parting or at the end of a conversation or used to express farewell. There are some synonyms of Good Bye; adieu, adios, arrivederci, auf wiedersehen, au revoir, bye, bye-bye, cheerio, farewell, goodby, good-by, goodbye, good day, sayonara, etc. Actually Good Bye itself has an interesting etymology and some facts, how the word Good Bye could be present nowadays.
The word ‘Good” of Good Bye was originally ‘God’ and actually a contraction of ‘god be with you’. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it had various spellings such as ‘god boyee’ and ‘godbwye’. Good Bye is gradual reduction that can be traced through a series of metamorphoses, for instance; had Shakespeare used ‘God be wy you’, ‘godbwye’, and ‘God buy’ ye’. And those words did not reach modern Good Bye until the 18th century. The word God itself probably became ‘good’ through the association with other greetings such as ‘good day’, ‘good night’, ‘good morning’, etc, because of that it evolved to become the new word Good Bye that we know nowadays.

Discussion
From those etymology, finding, facts, and the changes that happen in “Good Bye”, we can see that actually it is not coming directly as that Good Bye itself, but Good Bye has the process become Good Bye, start from 16th century (God be with you) and since 18th century become Good Bye. Also the affected by other greetings such as Good Evening and Good Day is one of parts that influence the changed process of Good Bye.
The meaning itself actually is not really different with my interpretation first, and also the etymology is answer my question about should we still say Good Bye if the discord is not in the good circumstances. Based on the etymology that Good Bye is God be with you, so in my opinion, it means that in every kind of circumstances even good or bad, God always with us in our every single times. That’s why, no problem if we say Good Bye in any kind or circumstances even though in the worst discord.
There are also some synonyms of Good Bye such as bye-bye, cheerio, good day, and the interesting one is Sayonara, as we know that Sayonara is one of Indonesia’s vernaculars right? How Sayonara could be more famous ad exists in international rather than Selamat Tinggal in Bahasa? Well, next I’m trying to find out about this kind of phenomenon. Thank you.

Good Bye ^.^
